Biometrics, the automated recognition of individuals based on their behaviour and biological characteristics has made its presence felt in India in a big way and has tremendous market potential. The technology of biometrics has started proliferating with applications in India to ration cards, urban and rural banking, microfinance, e-Passports, PAN cards, fingerprint IDs with Defence and Police administrations, biometrics based citizen IDs, consumer and industrial apps including access control, biometric ATMs, electronic door locks, and biometric access to laptops. Biometric killer apps in India have penetrated unique sectors such as DNA Banks, Airport and baggage security, Branchless banking, secure access control and even large-scale apps such as biometric smart cards for vegetable vendors and slum dwellers.
