World over, paper-based payment instruments are declining although they still constitute a large portion of payments by volume. Electronic payments are growing at a much faster rate than paper-based instruments. In fact, the share of value of electronic payments in the overall value is catching up with paper-based value, and if this trend continues, the value of payments through electronic payments will be more than the value through paper-based instruments, in a matter of few more years.
In India too, Payment and Settlement Systems has moved to electronic settlement system and very soon it is going to witness a sea change. Future of Indian Payment System is moving from e-Commerce to m-Commerce connecting customers, banks and utility companies, Internet Banking with unwired last mile technology, Cheque Truncation System with paper-based processing changing over to Image based and Electronic Cheque Clearance System and Smart Card, a revolution in secure data storage and identity management mechanisms.
The growing volume on RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement System) in India clearly indicates that it is settling down as the preferred choice for large value payments. On the retail payment side, although there are multiple systems and options such as ECS debit, ECS credit, EFT & NEFT, their contributions in overall payments and usage has not been quite high.
